The method of determining compatibility through negative charts is a simple yet insightful approach in Jyotish astrology. It focuses on the placement of challenging planets (malefics) and positive planets (benefics) in the charts of two people. By comparing their charts house by house, astrologers assess how well these energies align.
Malefics—planets like Mars, Saturn, Sun, Rahu, and Ketu—are considered to bring challenges, while benefics—such as Jupiter, Venus, and an unaffected Moon or Mercury—are associated with harmony and ease.
The technique involves overlaying one chart onto the other, aligning their houses. For example, the first house of one person’s chart is compared to the first house of the other, the second to the second, and so forth. This allows an astrologer to evaluate the interactions between planets in specific areas of life.
1. Empty Houses:
If both corresponding houses are empty, compatibility in that area is perfect. This indicates no conflicting energies or obstacles between the two individuals regarding the matters of that house.
2. Benefic in One Chart, Empty in the Other:
If one person has a benefic in a house and the other person’s corresponding house is empty, it is also completely harmonious. The benefic provides positive energy without resistance, creating ease in this area.
3. Malefic in One Chart, Empty or Benefic in the Other:
If one person has a malefic in a house while the other person’s house is empty or holds a benefic, this creates tension. The individual with the malefic may face struggles in this area, leading to misunderstandings or conflicts with their partner, whose outlook on this area is more neutral or positive.
4. Malefics in Both Charts:
When both partners have a malefic in the same house, compatibility is better than the previous scenario but still not ideal. Both may share similar difficulties in this area of life, allowing them to empathize with each other, even though the challenges remain.
Some houses are especially significant when assessing compatibility because they represent key aspects of relationships. These are:
The 1st house: Self and personality.
The 2nd house: Family, values, and resources.
The 4th house: Home, emotional connection, and comfort.
The 5th house: Romance, love, and creativity.
The 7th house: Partnerships and marriage.
The 8th house: Shared resources and intimacy.
The 9th house: Beliefs, spiritual connection, and growth.
The 12th house: Subconscious connection, sacrifices, and endings.
If more than four of these important houses show incompatibility (often scored as 0%), the relationship is likely to face significant challenges.
