What Is Dasha?
- The word Dasha signifies a time-period in a person’s life when specific planets govern outcomes.
- A birth chart remains static, but Dashas act like timing sensors, triggering results based on planetary periods.
How Dasha Works
- The starting Dasha (Mahadasha) is determined by the Moon’s nakshatra at birth.
- There is a fixed sequence of nine Dashas:
Ketu → Venus → Sun → Moon → Mars → Rahu → Jupiter → Saturn → Mercury
Each has its own duration:
- Ketu – 7 yrs
- Venus – 20 yrs
- Sun – 6 yrs
- Moon – 10 yrs
- Mars – 7 yrs
- Rahu – 18 yrs
- Jupiter – 16 yrs
- Saturn – 19 yrs
- Mercury – 17 yrs
What Happens During a Mahadasha
- Planet Activation
The Mahadasha planet and its sign/house become prominent. - Impact via Bhavas
The planet also acts upon the houses it owns and aspects.
Example: If Jupiter is in Cancer in the 6th house, during Jupiter Mahadasha:- 6th house (where Jupiter sits) is activated
- Jupiter’s own houses (9th and 12th from Cancer) — the 2nd and 10th houses — are influenced
- Its aspects (10th, 12th, and 2nd houses) are also triggered
- Nakshatra Connections
The nakshatras ruled by the Mahadasha planet also turn active, activating their own houses and any planets placed within them.
Strength and Nature of Dashas
Dashas influence life differently depending on the nature of the planet and whether they fall in odd or even numbers:
- Odd-numbered Dashas are generally more challenging
- Even-numbered Dashas bring smoother outcomes
Yet, a strong Mahadasha lord can soften even an odd Dasha, while a weak planet can dampen even an even Dasha.
The Seven-Fold Dasha Pattern
Parashara describes life’s timeline in seven key Dashas:
- Birth Dasha – Focuses on self and survival (1st house)
- Sampat Dasha – Builds identity and expression (2nd house)
- Vipata Dasha – Brings trials and competition (3rd house)
- Kshema Dasha – Settlement and growth (4th house)
- Pratyari Dasha – Loss and karmic balancing (5th house)
- Sadhaka Dasha – Spiritual reflection and service (6th house)
- Vadhaka Dasha – Transition and end of cycle (7th house)
Dashas beyond the seventh tend to coincide with later life phases like retirement or spiritual transition.
Timing Events with Dashas & Transits
- Dashas provide the phase of life (e.g., career, challenges, transformation).
- Transits (current planetary movements) act as triggers.
For example, success in gaining a job often aligns with Mahadasha or Antardasha of the 1st, 6th, 10th, or 11th house lords, along with supportive transits of planets like Jupiter or Saturn.
So
- Dasha is the astrological tool for timing life events
- Each Mahadasha reflects different phases of life, shaped by planetary strength, nakshatra connections, and transits
- Together, they form a cosmic blueprint of life’s journey, highlighting when growth, hardship, achievement, or endings may occur
By observing which Dasha and Antardasha are active—and how they interact with your chart—you gain insight into predictive possibilities and karmic patterns unfolding in your life.
