One of the hottest topics in the practice of astrologers is partner astrology or determining compatibility, whether for the purpose of marriage or relationship.
And although for the majority of questionnaires this task seems easy, solving it is complex and relies on the analysis of many factors, at least in two birth charts. The task is further complicated by the fact that many relationships lead to the appearance of children and the need for a family environment to shelter and nurture them for quite a long period of life.
Judging these factors correctly is a test of any astrologer’s skills to the extent that it is not uncommon for someone to even refuse such an analysis. There are Vedic astrologers who believe that giving such advice is such an involved and serious undertaking for the astrologer that if the directions given by him are not correct, he will harm his own family life.
Apart from the technical side of the subject, related to numerous and complex calculations, there is another one – the most intimate and sensitive spheres of people’s lives and emotions, their hopes, dreams and brightest aspirations, as well as the long-term course of life are inevitably affected. their way. In the course of consultations, intimate facts and very personal information are shared.
Analyzing partner compatibility in Indian astrology involves several steps:
1.Determining the life expectancy of the two partners
– aims to determine whether the two will have a similar life expectancy;
2.Determining mental and mental health
– important factors, both with a view to cohabitation and in the upbringing and education of children;
3.Determining the propensity for polygamy (including extramarital affairs)
– whether the partners will have several marriages or whether they have a propensity for extramarital affairs;
4.Influence of malefics (malefic planets) in certain houses, etc. doshas
– presence of malefic planetary configurations that could permanently and deeply upset relationships;

– a detailed system of synastry analysis according to 8 global criteria.
Calculating life expectancy
Life expectancy according to Jyotish would be:
•Infant mortality –
– from 0 to 8 years – means that the born will die in infancy;
Balarishta
•Short –
– from 8 to 32 years;
Alpayu
•Middle –
– from 33 to 75 years;
Madhyayu
•Long –
– more than 75 years.
Purnayu
When analyzing the compatibility between partners, it is looked at whether there are indicators for
Alpayu
, i.e. short life span. We will not go into detail about this part of the analysis, because in view of the morality adopted in Western society, it is inapplicable or at the very least can be considered “unethical”. However, determining life expectancy is an invariable part of horoscope analysis and has been for centuries. In the Western astrological tradition, the determination of the possible death of the newborn was also considered the second most important event after birth. Modern astrology in extremely rare cases deals with the study of this question in the map.
There are a number of techniques in Jyotish that make it possible to fairly accurately calculate life expectancy and these are routinely applied by Vedic astrologers. However, their detailed consideration is beyond the focus of this article and they will not be mentioned in detail here.
Assessment of mental and mental health
The second, no less important step is to determine the mental and psychological state of the future partner. There are a number of indicators that can make marriage undesirable, and all partnerships painful and difficult, especially if the native does not make any effort towards spiritual awareness.
On the other hand, it should be known that marriage, like any more serious, committed partnership, is a test that implies learning certain lessons for both.
In this part of the analysis attention is paid to the Moon and Mercury as they symbolize our emotional and intellectual mind, their status in the horoscope is determined and whether there is serious affliction from malefics. The principle “it’s all in the mind” applies here, i.e. we chain ourselves by following the attachments conditioned by the mind and senses. A strong affliction of the Moon and Mercury from malefics can be the cause of a number of psychological complexes that can subsequently manifest in the partnership and in relation to the partner, especially when we come across a “catalyst” partner who somehow responds and engages this theme in our natal chart.
By tracking current transits, directions and progressions, and from the perspective of Vedic astrology and planetary periods, we can guess what type of partner is likely to enter our lives at this time, depending on which partner theme becomes relevant and comes up on the agenda . The same conditionality is traced in the partner’s map.
The dynamics of the horoscope explain why in relationships, once they have already started, something does not “work”, as it reflects the attitude of one and the other partner within the time period when the two meet and immediately before the first meeting.
If the transits reflect real events, the progression very often gives an answer to the question of what the attitude was at the time and before the meeting. Accordingly, according to our attitude, on the principle of resonance, we attract a certain type of partner and relational dynamic.
Third step – analysis of propensity to polygamy, including propensity to multiple (extramarital) relationships, i.e. when the native does not feel satisfied with only one partner. In the language of modern astropsychology, this is called incompatible needs, i.e. a single partner is not able to be so multifaceted that we recognize in him all our ideas about the Other – the one who should complete us.
Here a whole complex of indicators is analyzed in the Rashi (D1) and Navamsha (D9) charts – the rulers of the first and seventh houses, Venus and Mars (Jupiter) as natural significators of the mate in male and respectively. in a female chart, DK – darakaraka, UL – Upapada Lagna which is also a specific marriage indicator, planets in the 7th house and aspecting it, as well as the status of several more houses – 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th and 11th, as far as they have direct or an indirect connection with the couple’s life together.
Fourth house is associated with sukha ie. our emotional and mental comfort, our ability to feel happy (and its natural significator is the Moon; Mercury also relates to the 4th house as it relates to mentality).
Affliction of 4th house and resp. on the Moon can introduce complexities into the life of the partners.
In some, this may be due to emotional rigidity, coldness, in others to excessive emotionality, explosiveness, instability. All the inconsistencies in the temperament and emotionality of the couple become obvious at the stage when it comes to living together, and if the partners do not consciously work on themselves and do not strive for mutual balance and compromise, but only for the satisfaction of the ego and their own needs, some seemingly “small” things can turn into stones on the road that overturn the cart.

The Moon nodes – Rahu and Ketu, also deserve attention
if they are in connection with certain houses and significator planets, since in conjunction with a planet they have the property of causing a symbolic “darkening”, such as overexposing or suppressing the functions of the affected planet.
Located in an angular house, the nodes often bring events and situations of an unpredictable, even somewhat explosive nature, beyond our conscious control. They are also associated with a number of psychological complexes, and from the point of view of medical astrology, with the genetic factor, with heredity. These can also be topics that are passed down from generation to generation in a given family structure.
According to the Vedas, the so-called “karmic marriages”, as well as a number of addictions, are determined by the Lunar nodes in view of. In the context of the fourth step, the so-called dosha. The houses that are associated with our subjective feeling of “happiness” are the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th, so they are also subject to detailed consideration.

The 7th and 12th houses are related to sex life.
Assessment of “Bad” Planets
The so-called Mangal (or Kuja) dosha
, literally translated as “Mars flaw”,
is very popular in Vedic synastry .
This implies a position of Mars in certain houses – in the Lagna sign, in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses. According to some Vedic astrologers, the positions of Mars in certain signs make an exception, ie. the dosha is canceled or its influence mitigated. If the main Rashi chart lacks such a dosha, but we still attract “Mars” partners, you will often find an answer in its presence in the Navamsha. It must be assessed.
People with Mangal dosha in their charts are defined as Manglik and in Indian tradition are forbidden to marry until the age of 28.the age at which this position is considered to “lose” the main part of its power and has not to cause so many problems in the relationship.
–
The presence of Mangal dosha leads to problems and conflicts in marriage, delay, suppression of harmony in relationships, distance and coldness, divorce, loss of partner. Apart from these effects on marriage, this position is also associated with: problems with education, delay in career realization, lack of strength, courage, vitality and self-confidence, difficulties in childbirth (for women).
According to tradition, however, if both partners are Manglik, then the marriage is allowed and will not be problematic. The ban applies only to cases where only one of the two is a Manglik. Even in these cases there may be an earlier marriage, as there are special rituals preceding the marriage which have the power to “nullify” or greatly weaken the strength of the Mangal dosha.
Often in Jyotish the so-called remedies or “corrective measures/means”, mostly to weaken and soften the bad positions in the map. A variety of remedies are recommended in each specific case.
In case of Mangal dosha, it is recommended that the native wear a red coral ring (Ratti Moonga) made of silver, gold or preferably a special alloy of 8 metals (so called Ashtadhatu – containing gold, silver, copper, zinc, lead, tin, iron and antimony) on the ring finger of the right hand. Wearing a necklace (mala) of eight facial rudrakshas, as well as hanging certain yantras in a prominent place, has an additional enhancing effect. Daily chanting of the Hanuman Chalisa mantra is recommended.
Naturally, Mars is not the only malefic planet, and along with it, attention should also be paid to the position of the other malefics in the above houses – the Sun, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu:
1.Saturn, insofar as it brings coldness and alienation, fears, rigidity, indifference, antipathy, hostility, and according to some authors even manipulative tendencies in relationships;
2.The Sun, insofar as it is associated with the ego, self-centered tendencies, self-infatuation, neglect, condescension, arrogant behavior;
3.Rahu and Ketu
are considered by Indians to be shadow planets – “demons” that have a predominantly malefic influence on matter. At a low level of spiritual development, the influence of the nodes in the map can also manifest itself as self-focus, expressed or in the frantic pursuit of desires, personal goals (and objects), narcissism, egocentrism, and at the same time as a tendency to isolate a person in his own limited world, to close in its shell (Ketu). Nodes, where they are placed, bring an element of explosiveness and unpredictability, as well as duplicity, ambiguity and sometimes destructiveness, obsession, fiction, blindness, fanatical pursuit of desires, narrow-mindedness and extreme arrogance.
The positions of Mars and Rahu in certain houses from Lagna and Chandra Lagna are considered to be more inauspicious doshas, ie. from the Ascendant and the sign of the Moon.
The system of 8 criteria for assessing compatibility
The last, fifth step is the so-called Kuta agreement based on the lunar nakshatra
in the couple’s charts. This is the most popular synastric system in Jyotish, which, however, has no counterpart in Western astrology. It represents a “system of criteria for compatibility of partners”, which is described in the old classical text
. There are many variations of this system, which in some parts of India is called “Purottama” and is sometimes referred to by the term “Anukulya” (a Sanskrit word meaning “happy marriage”). The most popular system is the so-called Ashtakuta – showing compatibility between man and woman, based on 8 (ashta) criteria (kutas) and widely practiced by Vedic astrologers.

“Prasna Marga“
In the context of this system, the mental and emotional compatibility (or incompatibility) of the two partners is considered, insofar as the Moon is connected with “manas” – with reason, the reflective mind, i.e. conditioned by our emotions and impressions.
Kuta indicator analysis is an in-depth look at the psychological, mental, spiritual and physical compatibility of the couple – that “chemistry” that is often talked about these days when it comes to unconscious attraction between two people. According to her, the two cards are compared for compatibility on 8 criteria, each receiving a certain score. The scores (points) of all 8 criteria are finally added up to give a total. Depending on its numerical expression, an assessment is made as to whether the compatibility is bad, average, very good or excellent.
The list of 8 criteria of Ashtakuta contains:
Nādī-
,
Rāshi-
,
Gana-
,
Graha Maitri
,
Yoni-
,
Dina-
, Your- Vashya and Varna
These are the mandatory ones that are calculated in this analysis, as they give a summary, detailed and multi-faceted compatibility analysis. The criteria are considered both individually and in various combinations with each other, so as to describe the nature of the relationship between the two. Let’s say Nadikuta The criterion is one of the most important, as it shows the energy compatibility in the couple and is informative about their ability to create offspring. Often, if this criterion is weak, even if the couple has a very good connection and harmony, they cannot have children. Paradoxically, this happens even in young and perfectly healthy couples.
Another criterion –
the Yoni Kuta
-it is an indicator of sexual compatibility and the level of sexual attraction and satisfaction between the two.
To these 8 main, sometimes additional kutis are also surveyed, such as: Mahendra , Stree-Dirgha , Rajju , Vedha , when a final conclusion of the compatibility analysis has to be given.
Along with the lunar nakshatras, other factors are included in the system, but due to their specificity and connection with the Vedic life philosophy and culture, I will not consider them now. Such factors are related to income and expenditure,
– dominance of one partner over the other, etc.
In the end, the presence of a lot of mutual love between the two is highlighted as a very important factor, which cancels out any possible incompatibilities. In this case, even if the calculations give an unfavorable prognosis, marriage is allowed…
A marriage concluded “for love” in the Vedic culture has a special attitude, even a special name – Gandharva Vivah (Sanskrit: गंधर्व विवाह). Such was the marriage of love and free choice in Ancient India. As you probably know, most marriages back then, and often today, were arranged, with the parents selecting a suitable party with the assistance of an astrologer. Marriages between representatives of different castes were not allowed.
In Vedic astrology, Jupiter is associated with tradition. A marriage concluded in compliance with generally accepted canons and with regard to social status. In modern Western astrology this role is assigned to Saturn. Accordingly, according to Vedic culture, the engagement of malefics in conjunction with marital significators in the natal chart may also suggest such a moment. In modern society these are usually intercultural (mixed) marriages, i.e. where tradition is ignored.
The success and fruits of a marriage are judged by the state of Jupiter, and its durability, stability – in view of the influence of Saturn. What is the formula for a happy, lasting and successful marriage? There is no universal and generally valid formula. Everyone has to discover it for themselves in the relationship with their partner.
